The Barn Party for Prevention was held on October 8, 2021, at Utah State Fair Park. The event raises funds for Prevent Child Abuse Utah’s prevention programs. The event followed Covid-19 safety protocols. Dominion Energy was the presenting sponsor for this year’s event.
Games and Fun
The Barn Party had various activities and games. For example, carnival games included steer ropin’, a balloon pop, the duck pluck, and psychic readings. Prizes for the games included Apple Watches, home assistant devices, cordless speakers, a Rumba, and other household gadgets.
Games were accompanied by delicious western food including BBQ brisket sliders, chicken and waffles, and berry cobbler shooters. At the end of the night, guests received a piece of Magleby’s chocolate cake. Game sponsors included Mazda Financial Services, the Tim Dahle Auto Group, DB Mechanical, Fuel Marketing, Mike & Sterling’s Flooring America, Wheels of Justice, and PhotoCamper.com.
The event also boasted an impressive array of silent auction items donated by various local businesses. Items donated by Blankets by Brian, Harmon’s, Muddie Buddies, The Give Back Program, Citrus Pear, and Avanti Medical Spa were popular with attendees. At the end of the night, the live auction with auctioneer, Robert Olsen offered some fantastic items including a Traeger grill, a suite for 6 guests for the Utah Jazz, a week’s vacation in St George, and guest segments on Good Things Utah, Utah’s #1-morning show.
Award Ceremony
The most important portion of the night honored this year’s recipients of the Anne Freimuth Child Advocate of the Year Award. The award is named after Anne Freimuth, Prevent Child Abuse Utah’s Executive Director in 2003-2012. Award nominees must specifically demonstrate dedication and active involvement to protect Utah’s children. Past winners include Representative Angela Romero, Senator Aaron Osmond, Senator Daniel Thatcher, Senator Todd Weiler, Deaondra Brown of The 5 Browns, and TV Journalist Kim Fischer. The 2021 recipients were Rabbi Avremi Zippel and Krystal Hazlett.
In 2019, Rabbi Zippel publicly came forward about the decade of sexual abuse he had endured at the hands of a childhood caretaker. Today, he has taken a leadership role in combatting sexual abuse in religious communities around the world. You can watch his acceptance speech here.
Among many accomplishments, Krystal Hazlett worked with the Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (SAKI) as the grant manager and site coordinator. In recent years, she traveled around the state advocating for victims of sexual assault and educating law enforcement officers. Pat Hazlett, Krystal’s mother, accepted her award posthumously.
